Our Patrons Special Visit
Our patrons, James and Sarah Beattie rushed back from a
football match at Portsmouth to bring a little sunshine to the children
on Piam Brown ward. James and Sarah spent time chatting to the
children and gave each of them a present from the Giving Tree Appeal.
The children (and some of the parents!) were able to chat with the
couple and forget, for a while, their worries. James said, ‘No matter
what troubles I go through in life, this visit puts it all into
perspective. I have been humbled by meeting the children and their
families staying on the ward.’
The Giving Tree
The Giving Tree Appeal was started in 2004 by Sophie whilst
she was being treated at Piam Brown Children’s Cancer Ward at
Southampton University Hospital. She wanted to ensure that every
child in hospital over Christmas would have presents to brighten their
day.
Members of the local community and children from Norwood
Primary School took part in the ‘Giving Tree’ appeal by bringing a
present to place under the Christmas tree. Following a special assembly
at the school the presents were then taken to Southampton and
Winchester hospital wards. Children from the school gave presents to
children undergoing treatment in the hospital.
Ladies Pamper Evening
Our first pamper evening was held at Fleming Park Bowling
Club in December 2006 with over 75 ladies enjoying an evening of
pampering. Local beauticians worked very hard to ensure that all who
came had pampering from manicures and pedicures to reflexology and
Indian head Massage. There were also assorted stalls selling crafts and
gifts. Over £560 was raised towards the Appeal. Our grateful thanks to
all the beauticians for their hard work.
Six a Side Football Tournament
Our first Football Tournament took place on Saturday 11th
November, at Crestwood College, Eastleigh, organised By Melvin Laney,
Chairman, Edwina Martin – Secretary and Penny Stanger, under 15 Manager
of Cherbourg F.C.
Teams of all ages took part, local companies, local football
clubs and two teams from Crestwood College, who had kindly offered the
use of their facilities for the event. The tournament displayed good
sportsmanship and the winners of the Tournament were the Dynamo’s who
are no doubt grateful to the late substitution of the young player Josh
Laney, playing for the first time in goal and making a remarkable
impact.
The tournament raised £1134.23.
