Ladies Pamper Evening 2007
Over 70 ladies enjoyed a pamper session of their choice at the
event held at the Masonic Centre in Eastleigh. Indian Head Massages,
Face or Back Massage, and manicures were all on offer thanks to
therapists from Eastleigh College.
There was also the opportunity to purchase a special
something from stalls including Aloe Vera, The Body Shop, Daisy Chain
Jewelry and many more.
A huge thanks to all who supported this event and helped us
raise over £600.00
Sophie’s Place Grand Opening
Television presenter Sally Taylor, OBE opened Sophie’s Place
on 24 October 2007. This dedicated children’s assessment and
treatment ward will treat nearly 300 children a month. Thanks to all
those who have supported our fundraising efforts a fifteen year dream
has been recognised for Dr Keith Foote, consultant pediatrician and
Divisional Director of the Family Services Division at the Royal
Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester.
Dr Ian Rodd, Sophie’s consultant whilst she was receiving
treatment said, ‘We could not have achieved this without charitable
funding. It is a testament to Sophie and the work the Sophie Barringer
Trust has done for us. I don’t really have the words to express my
gratitude to all those who have helped achieve this wonderful goal’
On opening the area, Sally Taylor said, ‘Having heard how
much people have been involved in raising money for this, I feel very
humble. The area is friendly, warm and welcoming. I can’t think of a
better place for children and their families.
Race Night Flutter Raises £1700
Fleming Park Bowling Club provided the venue for an evening
of fundraising and fun for Sophie’s Appeal. Over £1700 was raised at the
Race Night which included supper and a well supported raffle.
Winning jockeys in each race received a bottle of wine and
the winning sponsor from of the Sponsors’ Race won a case. The top three
jockeys from the final race took away £100.
Ed Martin, treasurer of the Sophie Barringer Trust, the
charity behind Sophie’s Appeal said, ‘It was a really great evening.
Everyone really enjoyed themselves, especially those who fluttered and
won! It is great to have such wonderful support.’
£10,000 Towards Unravelling The Secrets Of Cancer
We have donated £10,000 to a dedicated cancer research team
at Southampton General Hospital. The donation is the third in as many
years, and will go towards finding possible breakthroughs for treatment
techniques in specific cancers.
Alan Hunt, one of the research team at Southampton General
Hospital, explained the research project’s progress and said: “We are
really excited by some of our cancer research findings which are soon
to be published worldwide. This would not have been possible without
the tremendous support from The Sophie Barringer Trust.”
Annual General Meeting 2007
The Sophie Barringer Trust held its second AGM on 26 September
2007 at the Holiday Inn, Eastleigh.
The Chair for the evening highlighted the work of the Trust
this year before the treasurer gave the financial report revealing that
we have raised over £44,000 this year. Ian Rodd, a consultant
pediatrician at Winchester spoke about Sophie’s Place.
Thank you to all who have supported the Appeal and helped us
raise such a magnificent sum.
Band Aid
Eastleigh Town Band provided an evening of fabulous
music to raise funds for Sophie’s Appeal on 22 September 2007.
The event, attended by both the present and past Mayors of Eastleigh
not only entertained the audience, but also was broadcast live on
Hospital Radio, reaching many more who would not have been able to
attend.
A huge thank you to the Band for their hours of
practice and giving their time to raise much needed funds.
Holiday of a Lifetime
A family from Hampshire was treated to a holiday of a
lifetime thanks to Sophie’s Appeal. The holiday to Disneyland, Paris
was arranged by Beyond the Moon following a donation from Sophie’s
Appeal.
The family said, ‘Emily and George had a great time. Thanks for all you
did for us.’
It is only through your generous donations that we can really
make a difference to the lives of poorly children and their families.
Particular thanks go to the BAA Communities Trust and staff at
Southampton Airport for their continued support and donations.
Cherbourg F.C. Nets over £1000 for Sophie's Appeal
The 2nd six-a-side Football Tournament in aid of Sophie’s
Appeal took place on the 14th July at Crestwood College, Eastleigh, who
kindly offered the use of their facilities for the event. The
tournament was organised by the management team of Cherbourg Football
Club.
Teams of all ages took part, ranging from local companies,
local football clubs and players who came together for the day to form a
team, and enjoy a game of football.
The Junior Section was won by Laney’s Legends with their
Captain Josh Laney collecting the Cup. Josh also displayed winning form
in last years tournament.
The Adult section this year producing new champions in the
form of Warbury Warriors, runners up for the second time were S & D
Old Boys, who vow to return to win next year’s tournament.
The Cups and medals were presented by Nicky Bainger an
ex-saints player.The day was graced by fine weather and good
sportsmanship. The event raised over £1000.00 for Sophie’s Appeal.
Cream Teas at Muffin Cottage
Sarah and Nigel Guilder brought a ray a sunshine to a leafy
corner of Chandler’s Ford in July and raised over £550 for Sophie’s
Appeal.
An Afternoon Tea of sandwiches, cakes and scones washed down
with an everlasting cup of tea was enough to brighten everyone’s day.
Stars shine for Sophie's Place
Over 70 ladies ran in memory of Sophie in this years Race for
Life, Southampton.
Sophie’s Stars, made up from friends and family who knew
Sophie and also many members of Curves, Eastleigh joined over 10,000
women running and walking to raise money for Cancer Research, a leading
UK cancer charity.
Thank you to you all for your support and particularly to
Jeanette from Curves for her tremendous support.
A Hot Donation
Grateful thanks go to Hadyn Brown and all at Winchester Fire
Station for their magnificent donation of £1000 to Sophie’s Appeal.
This money will help us to develop Sophie’s Place into a
first class Day Care Treatment and Assessment area at The Royal
Hampshire County Hospital, Winchester.
Ladies Circle Supports Sophie’s Place
Winchester Ladies gave a welcome boost to Sophie’s Place.
Members of the Circle raised and donated £500.00 at Sophie’s
Place. Thank you for your generous support.
Summer Ball 2007
An evening of dancing and dodgems, games and a grand auction
helped raise over £25,000 at the Rosebowl, home of Hampshire Cricket.
After enjoying a Pimms Reception and buffet held in the
Hampshire Suite, the fun began with comedian Mike Osman. There was time
to reflect and remember a very special little girl who lost her fight
with cancer at the age of just six. Sophie was and still remains the
inspiration behind the Sophie Barringer Trust.
Dr Ian Rodd, Paediatric Consultant at the Royal Hampshire
County Hospital in Winchester, thanked the Trust for their hard work and
dedication before describing how the money raised would be used in the
development of Sophie’s Place. He said ‘Sophie’s Place, the
assessment area named after a truly inspirational little girl, will
provide a valuable day treatment facility for up to 300 children a
month.’
Russell Hartnell-Parker, Master of Ceremonies, began the
auction which raised in excess of £15,000. Guests saw a pair of
Ronaldinho signed football boots raise an amazing £5,000. Other items
in the auction included Coldplay front man Chris Martin signed guitar, a
limited edition cast signed Casino Royale photo piece and football
match VIP treatment for 4 at the Madejski Stadium for Reading v
Portsmouth.
JAD Building Contractors donated the top prize, a holiday in
Tenerife for 10 days in a 5* Hotel, for the raffle which was well
supported with donation from local businesses including The Holiday Inn,
Signature Flight Support, Howden’s Joinery Company and many others.
Masonic Support for Sophie's Appeal
Sophie’s Appeal has received a very welcome boost to their
purse following fundraising efforts from the brethren of Hampshire
Lodge of Emulation.
Bob Timms, the Master of the Lodge, which meets in the town
centre, chose to support Sophie’s Appeal as the Charity of the Year and
donated over £1500 at a presentation luncheon held at the Masonic
Centre. The event was well attended by the brethren and their families
who were entertained with an after dinner speech about ‘The Life and
Times of a Hampshire Shepherd’.
Every Penny Counts
The Hampshire Chronicle Group ran an appeal in the Romsey
Advertiser highlighting Sophie’s Place and the work that is currently
ongoing to provide a new children’s assessment and treatment area at
The Royal Hampshire County Hospital, Winchester.
The Group donated over £500. A big thank you to all who
advertised in this feature and to the Chronicle Group for your
tremendous support.
A Marathon Run
Donna said, ‘I must be mad!!! But seriously.. please sponsor
me as I run 26 miles 385 yards in memory of a courageous little girl
who lost her battle for life.’ Donna Shave, Chairperson of the Sophie
Barringer Trust, completed her first marathon in just over five and a
half hours. So far she has raised a marathon £1759.00. Well done Donna!
A Holiday of a Lifetime
Thanks to your generous donations, Sophie’s Appeal has
donated £5000.00 to sponsor two local children to go on the holiday of a
lifetime with their families. One family from West Sussex are going to
a holiday resort I in Amsterdam. Another is going to Disneyland

Southampton Airport Safety Day
Southampton Airport held two Safety Days in May this year to
remind everyone who works around the planes about the need for extra
vigilance. The joint organizers, BAA Airside Operations and NATS, the
National Air Traffic Service, chose Sophie’s Appeal as the beneficiary
of a well supported raffle. Thanks go in particular to Iain
MacDermott-Paine from BAA and Kelly Powell from NATS for organizing the
event and for the donation of £250 from the raffle.
Quiz Nite
We held our third quiz night in March 2007 and an enjoyable,
brain-taxing evening was had by all. Once again, our host Jenny and her
hard working team provided excellent hospitality and Quizmaster Colin
provided an excellent array of questions to tax even the most seasoned
of teams. Congratulation to our current champions…. Keep an eye on our events page
for the next quiz evening.
Craft Fayre
The first Craft Fayre was held at Eastleigh Baptist Church
hall in March. There were many stalls and thanks go to Virgin Vie,
Pampered Chef, Daisy Chain Jewelry and Ella’s Florist for their
support. Home made jams, chutneys and cakes were a sell out. We would
like to thank the fundraising team for all of their hard work. The
event and raffle were well supported and the day raised £342.00
Country and Western Evening
Our thanks go to the Grand Master of the Hampshire Lodge of
Emulation and his wife for organizing a Country and Western evening in
support of the Appeal.
Eastleigh College Quiz
Eastleigh College has chosen Sophie’s Appeal as one of its
charities of the year and started off their fundraising with a
quizzical evening of fun. Our thanks go to all who made the evening
such a success, particularly Malcolm Clarke for all of his hard work.
Sophie’s Place
Sophie’s Appeal has donated £30,000 to fund this exiting new
children’s assessment area on Northbrook Ward at The Royal Hampshire
County Hospital in Winchester. Work started in March, but there is
still a long way to go to be able to fund this project to completion. Click here

Mother’s Day Lunch
The Hampshire Lodge of Emulation hosted another event in
support of Sophie’s Appeal on Mothers Day. A short talk followed by a
lovely meal and great raffle earned much appreciated funds towards
Sophie’s Place.
Captains Charity Donation
The Rose Bowl County Golf Club Seniors and Ladies sections
have clubbed together this year to Support Sophie’s Appeal raising over
£1300.00. Events such the Captain’s Charity Day, collection boxes and
lake ball donations culminating in a presentation from the current
captains, Chris Jones and Honor Bushnell.
B & Q 10k Road Race
Sophie’s Appeal received a welcome boost to its fundraising
coffers from Trevor Harper when he took part in this years B & Q
Race and raised £175. Trevor completed the race in just over 57
minutes. Well done!
Barleycorn Golf Society
The customers and staff of The Barleycorn Public House in
Hedge End have come up trumps again for Sophie’s Appeal, a local
children’s cancer charity. Following on from a generous donation from
fundraising by The Barleycorn Ladies darts team, the Barleycorn Golf
Society recently donated over £800 to the Appeal.
Gervais Head, President of the Society said, ‘We are always
looking to help local charities and Sophie’s Appeal is a very worthy
cause. Our Friday night meat draw and a donation from the butcher,
Lewry’s of Botley all contributed to this total’
Research Funding
Sophie’s Appeal is currently sponsoring a research project at
Southampton university Hospital into a specific cure for certain
childhood cancers. Visit again soon when we will have more information
about the project.
Airport Staff Donate Their Winnings
The annual BAA I-Volunteer Awards were held once again to
recognize the charitable efforts of their staff across the seven UK
airports. Several Southampton staff were awarded prizes to help support
their nominated charity. Sophie’s Appeal was the lucky beneficiary from
two of those recohnised by the BAA. Jan Halliday, Director of Public
Affairs and Alan Dawson, Station Manager for the Airport Fire Service
donated their winnings to Sophie’s Appeal to help in our fundraising
efforts. Thanks guys!
